چکیده

We analyze the local flame extinction and reignition of a counterflow diffusion flame perturbed by a laminar vortex ring. Local flame extinction leads to the appearance of flame edges separating the burning and extinguished regions of the distorted mixing layer. The dynamics of these edges is modeled based on previous numerical results, with heat release effects fully taken into account, which provide the propagation velocity of triple and edge flames in terms of the upstream unperturbed value of the scalar dissipation. The temporal evolution of the mixing layer is determined using the classical mixture fraction approach, with both unsteady and curvature effects taken into account. Although variable density effects play an important role in exothermic reacting mixing layers, in this paper the description of the mixing layer is carried out using the constant density approximation, leading to a simplified analytical description of the flow field. The mathematical model reveals the relevant nondimensional parameters governing diffusion-flame/vortex interactions and provides the parameter range for the more relevant regime of local flame extinction followed by reignition via flame edges. Despite the simplicity of the model, the results show very good agreement with previously published experimental results. © 2007 The Combustion Institute. Published by Elsevier Inc. Soot topography in a planar diffusion flame wrapped by a line vortex

An experimental study of the interaction of a planar diffusion flame with a line vortex is presented. A planar diffusion flame is established between two coflowing, equal velocity streams of acetylene diluted with nitrogen and air. A line vortex is generated on demand by momentarily pulsing one of the flow streams by way of electromagnetic actuation of a piston in the flow apparatus. The flame–...

Extinction and Reignition in Counterflow Spray Diffusion Flames Interacting with Laminar Vortices

The interaction of laminar vortices with a methanol spray counterflow diffusion flame was studied experimentally with vortices generated from either the fuel side or the oxidizer side. The overall stoichiometry was such that the flame resided on the fuel side of the gas-stagnation plane. Local extinction and subsequent reignition were investigated as the circulation of the vortex was varied. It...

Near-field flow and flame dynamics of LOX/methane shear-coaxial injector under supercritical conditions

The mixing and combustion of liquid oxygen (LOX) and gaseous methane of a shear coaxial injector operating under supercritical pressures have been numerically investigated. The near-field flow and flame dynamics are examined in depth, with emphasis placed on the flame-stabilization mechanisms. The model accommodates the full conservation laws and real-fluid thermodynamics and transport phenomen...

Large eddy simulation of propane combustion in a planar trapped vortex combustor

Propane combustion in a trapped vortex combustor (TVC) is characterized via large eddy simulation coupled with filtered mass density function. A computational algorithm based on high order finite difference (FD) schemes, is employed to solve the Eulerian filtered compressible Navier-Stokes equations. In contrast, a Lagrangian Monte-Carlo solver based on the filtered mass density function is inv...

The Dynamics of Flame Flicker in Conical Premixed Flames: An Experimental and Numerical Study

Flame tip flicker in premixed conical laminar methane/air flames has been investigated using a coupled experimental and numerical approach. A time-dependent, multidimensional, Low Mach number Combustion Simulation (LMCS), an adaptive mesh refinement technique, has been adopted to handle the large range of scales characteristic of buoyantly driven phenomena. These simulations, using a reduced ch...
